South Park family!

While I'm not a huge South Park fan, this little online application to make your own South Park character was just too fun to pass up!  (kudos to Nicole!)

So, here I am, South Park incarnated: purple sweater, floppy hat, messy hair, ice cream ... and a sword.

And, because John doesn't blog, I had to do his, too!  Karate outfit, light saber, listening to tunes and having a beer.

After going this far, Amelia must have one, too!  Dragging her teddy bear, dancing with her guitar, messy hair do, diva crown, but still cute as a button!

Photo of note - helix nebula AKA Eye of God

medium_2003-11-a-web.jpg

This is a picture taken from the Hubble telescope of a planetary nebulae (the glowing gas around a dying, Sun-like star).  It's been referred to in urban legend email forwards as the "Eye of God", but NASA just calls it Helix Nebula.  Here's what NASA has to say about it:

This photograph of the coil-shaped Helix Nebula is one of the largest and most detailed celestial images ever made. The composite picture is a seamless blend of ultra-sharp images from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope combined with the wide view of the Mosaic Camera on the National Science Foundation's 0.9-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Ariz. The image shows a fine web of filamentary "bicycle-spoke" features embedded in the colorful red and blue ring of gas. At 650 light-years away, the Helix is one of the nearest planetary nebulae to Earth. A planetary nebula is the glowing gas around a dying, Sun-like star.

Ok.  I've been far too serious lately.  Here are some Ninja lessons for all you boys and girls out there.  You know you've been looking for them.

Photo of note - don't fall in!

I think we are all happy the shuttle *finally* got back up into space.  Here's a cool shot taken by NASA Science Officer John Phillips from the space station of Hurricane Emily on July 17, 2005.

Photo of note - Iraqi child's hand signals

medium_img_5455.jpeg

A photojournalist snapped this one in Iraq, and titled it "Hearts and minds."  A smiling child, carrying colorful boxes (tissues maybe?), flipping the foreign photographer the bird. I love it.  I think it shows frustration, hope, and fun all at the same time.   What do you think?

That's paper?

medium_annas_hummingbird.jpeg

Is this cool or what?  Can you believe someone actually created that with paper?  The artist is Robert J. Lang.  About him from his website:

"Robert J. Lang has been an avid student of origami for over thirty years and is now recognized as one of the world’s leading masters of the art, with over 400 designs catalogued and diagrammed. He is noted for designs of great detail and realism, and includes in his repertoire some of the most complex origami designs ever created."
